「NME」や「Smash Hits」の編集者だったニック・ローガンが、80年に創刊した雑誌「The Face」。 「i-D」がファッション雑誌としてスタートしたのに対し、「The FACE」は、ニック・ローガンの音楽誌編集の経歴が影響し、音楽とファッションが密接に絡み合うUKカルチャーそのものだった。創刊号の表紙にThe Specialsのジェリー・ダマーズを選ぶところから既に曲者。81年から84年までは、アートディレクションをネヴィル・ブロディが担当、刺激的なビジュアル要素が加わる。そしてスタイリストのレイ・ペトリ率いるBuffaloの紙面への登場や、コリーヌ・デイによるケイト・モスのデビューシューティングなど、まさに80年代、90年代を怒涛のごとく疾走していったのだった。 そんな絶頂を極めた雑誌にも終わりがやってくる。04年に廃刊になるその背景にも本書は迫っている。
