DANIEL JAMES"COUNTRY MUSIC BY DANIEL JAMES"ALLSTAR ALP 1031961Very rare private press country by Daniel James of Houston， the king of the song-poem -- James' numerous 45s included some great psycho rockabilly and his work is sought after by collectors. Born Daniel J. Mechura， he ran the Allstar， Kool， Teen， and Nu-Star labels. Allstar ran from 1953 to 1966， but was very sporadic in its releases. The whole label and setup was a scheme. But unlike a lot of the song-poem scammers， Mechura did get legitimate musicians to help -- and sometimes a release would be part song-poem craziness， part not. He self-released a number of rockabilly and psychobilly tunes of his own on that label， including "Rock Moon Rock" ... many of his 45s go for three digit figures and are well sought after. He'd even gotten Link Davis to record on his label! Eddie Noack did a crazy country song "Psycho" and helped him record several Allstar songs ... these on this LP here are classic Daniel James， nice country boppers， mid-pacers and ballads， as they say. 'The ambitious Mechura started out as the frontman of a local outfit， the Sun Valley Playboys， enjoying one release on the Starday label (which they paid for themselves) in 1955. By that time， Dan had discovered the seedy underworld of songwriter’s clubs and， sensing an opportunity ripe for exploitation， soon began doing business as president of “The Folk Writers Co-Operative Association，” generously offering “every songwriter the help which is necessary to succeed in this competitive field，” as stated in one sales pitch.
